Filing deadline extended to April 17; e-filing opens January 17

The IRS announced today that the filing deadline for the 2012 filing season has been moved to April 17, 2012. Since April 15 falls on a Sunday, the filing date would automatically be moved to April 16. However, Emancipation Day, a District of Columbia holiday falls on April 16 this year. Since IRS offices will be closed, the due date is moved to April 17.

The IRS also announced that it will begin accepting e-file and Free File returns on January 17, 2012.
